When doing credit repair, you can find all kinds of advice on how to send your letters. If you are surfing the web looking for information about credit repair, you will find free credit repair letters at several sites, but you will also find that there are software programs with “fill in the blank” type letters. Before you buy one of the many credit repair kits that are available on-line, there are certain sites you should visit to view and print the information that is included on your credit report.

One of the credit repair secrets that companies are selling is information about obtaining your credit report. Some companies charge for credit repair information, giving you what amounts to helpful hints; where to get your credit report; how to write a letter and other so called credit repair information that you can find on your own for free. If you have any “proof” that the information is inaccurate, (statements, cancelled checks, the “proof” depends on the individual item) list it here and enclose a copy of this material with your credit repair letter.

If you have any “proof” that the information is inaccurate, (statements, cancelled checks, the “proof” depends on the individual item) list it here and enclose a copy (not the original). Online credit repair services, as the name suggests, help customers improve their credit ratings by removing inaccurate, false or misleading information from their credit reports. Consumers have the right to dispute any information contained on their credit reports that they believe to be inaccurate, misleading, outdated or unverifiable.

If any information on your credit report is inaccurate, out-dated, unverifiable or misleading, you can dispute this information. The portion of the FCRA which relates directly to attempts to legally repair credit scores has to do with disputing inaccurate, unverifiable, misleading and outdated information included in one’s credit report. The next thing to learn about how to repair credit scores is how to report inaccurate information.

The next step towards credit repair is to report inaccurate information to the credit bureau. It is legal to attempt to repair your credit rating on your own by having false, out-dated or inaccurate information from your credit report. A legitimate credit repair company with legal professionals who specialize in credit issues can request that damaging information be removed from your credit report.

Most credit report repair services offer to assist individuals in getting certain information removed from the files maintained at the various credit bureaus. According to the information released by the FTC, the national credit repair agency claimed to own a unique and valuable software system that could remove any information from a consumer’s credit report.

For the purposes of this article, I compared the contents of two “credit repair kits”. These are being sold all over the internet. The ads go something like; “Repair Credit Rating! Increase Credit Score! Do It Yourself!” I just wanted to see what they were selling and if it was worth fifteen or sixteen dollars.

A credit repair kit is basically an informational packet, compiled by a writer, put in a box and sold to you. One company advertises a $9.95 kit, but will not tell you what is in it. Another company charges more, but at least provides content highlights. These kits are supposed to help you repair credit rating scores. The only thing they really do is put some credit related information in one place for you. If you have a library card, you can find the same information at the public library.

The credit repair kit that lists contents starts off with “how to set goals for yourself”, which sounds more like a self-help issue than a credit repair issue. Goals are important in all aspects of life, but there are probably better sources of goal-setting advice than an internet credit repair kit.

Next on the list was “how to prepare a budget”. Budgeting is very important, but it will not help you repair credit rating scores. Next in this credit repair kit was “how to wipe out debts without bankruptcy”. The only way to “wipe out debts” is to pay them off, by setting realistic goals and creating a budget. If you are unable to do this on your own, a non-profit Consumer Credit Counseling Service can help you. A recent law requires that you get credit counseling before you can declare bankruptcy. But, none of this has anything to do with helping you repair credit rating scores.

Where to find a secured credit card and where to get the best deals on credit cards are two more “reports” included in this credit repair kit. This information is available on line at several different websites dedicated to providing information about credit card deals. These sites do not charge a penny for this service and there information is accurate and up-to-date. Credit card companies are always changing their offers. But, this still has nothing to do with helping you repair credit rating scores.

More information included in the credit repair kit; how to obtain your credit reports. This is information that we at the Credit Repair Blog have provided many times, but here it is again; http://www.annualcreditreport.com. Spell it correctly or you may end up at a site selling a credit repair kit. But, at least this does have something to do with helping you repair credit rating scores.

Next in the credit repair kit list is sample letters for creditors and credit bureaus. In general, disputing information on your credit report and having that information removed will help you repair credit rating scores. You can dispute information on line at the credit bureau site, but these sites are not user friendly. You can dispute the information in writing, which is why the credit repair kit is offering to sell you sample letters. Or you can call the credit bureau, another not so fun thing to do, that will normally result in the credit bureau employee advising you to put your dispute in writing. It is hard to say why sample letters to creditors are included in this credit repair kit. Disputes are generally handled in this way. You report the dispute to the credit bureau. The credit bureau contacts the creditor or investigates in anyway that the credit bureau deems necessary. The credit bureau contacts you regarding its findings and sends you a copy of the corrected credit report which will help you repair credit rating scores.

If you can handle this on your own, then you probably do not need a credit repair kit. If you need help, contact a legal firm that specializes in credit repair issues.

If you are a considering the purchase of a new automobile, the purchase of your first home, or require a loan or credit line for any reason the initial step you should take is to view your credit report and see if you need to do some credit repair. Most of us don’t have a good credit rating; so don’t feel guilty if yours has a few gray areas; it doesn’t mean you can’t get credit. There are a number of respectable credit repair services that offer and help with your credit repair. If you determine that you need help to bring your credit score up, check out the resources found on the Internet. You will soon realize that there are thousands of credit repair companies to be found all over the place.

If this is the route that you wish to take you should ensure that you make sure the credit repair company you chose has a good reputation. Call and see if they are registered with the Better Business Bureau and to see if there have been grievances reported against them. You have to be extremely cautious whom you share your personal and financial information with; if you do not use a good company then you could end up worse off than you already are. Ask your friends, family or c-workers if they know of any good credit repair services that they or others they know have dealt with in the past.

Check your Credit Report

The first thing you should do is getting a copy of your credit report, because your credit may not have as bad as you think. By having a copy of your credit report you will see exactly what is reported on your credit file. Credit reports can be received on an annual basis for no charge. You can also receive a free credit report anytime you are turned down for credit.

Anytime you are turned down for credit, insurance, or an employment position you can receive a free copy of your credit report. This comes in handy if you are in need of any credit repair or if you need to use a credit repair service or a attorney to assist you with cleaning up your credit rating. You can find information about this by going to any of the three credit-reporting agency’s website. You can also receive your free annual credit report at annualcreditreport.com

You can dispute any unfamiliar or incorrect items on your credit report through the credit repair company. One of the credit repair services they offer is the ability to report your disputes online. If you are able to prove that a listed debt is not yours then they will have to remove it. An important step in bringing your credit score up is credit report repair.

Alternative Credit Use

Most lending institutions not only look at your present credit history but your past as well. They will be looking to see what your payment history has been like and if there have been problems in the past, and if these problems have since been resolved. If they feel that you are worthy then they may allow you to borrow the money you request. Anytime you have an account that you pay on a regular basis this can be used to prove that you are responsible in paying your bills. Items such as:

Electric or Gas bills

Cellular phone bills

Rent

Auto insurance payments

Furniture payments (even from a rent to own company)

When you have credit cards you should work to pay them off or down and keep them at low balances. Lenders will look at the amount of debt you owe in comparison to what the credit limit is on the account. If you are keeping your payments current this shows on your credit report and will help to persuade another lender to give you a chance. You may find that you need to use a credit card repair and put a plan in place to pay your credit card down so that your credit report looks better.

Credit Report Repairing

The best way to get your credit in the right place in order to qualify for a bank loan is with credit report repair. It is best not to wait until you need credit to do this. By watching your credit report you will be able to see if any thing has been reported on your report that is derogatory or erroneous. If there are items that belong to you, you should work out a pay schedule to pay them off and increase your credit score.

You can perform your own credit repair services or you can hire a professional credit repair company to help you. If your credit is in bad shape but manageable then you can learn to take care of it yourself. It of course is less costly to do it yourself and it will help you to learn what you need to know to keep your credit in good shape. A helpful book to have is dummy credit repair kit book.

There are many reasons that you need to make sure that you have a good and credit report. Lending institutions are not the only ones that check your credit report. A lot of Auto insurance companies will check your credit and offer those with a good credit report a lower rate. Some utility companies will check your credit to decide whether you need to pay a deposit or not. Even the cellular phone companies will either deny your service or charge extreme deposits depending on what your credit report shows.

A Society Built on Credit

No matter what your age is 18 or 80, you need to have good credit in order to get the items that need to have and even the ones you want. Years ago everything was paid for by cash actually changing hands, now everything has changed to plastic in the form of credit and debit cards. We are now a society built on credit. Just like the TV commercial about the man who has it all and he is asked, “How do you do it?” and his response is “I’m in debt up to my eyeballs.”

You will find that you are in a better position if you handle your credit in a responsible fashion. If you find yourself in a position where you do need a credit repair service make sure that you find someone that you can trust. Continue to watch your credit and use it wisely even after you have it cleaned up and you will avoid having to go through the credit repair office again. If you avoid living above your means and only use credit when you actually have the cash to pay for it then you will find that it will be easier. Remember, if you can’t afford it, then don’t buy it.

Daryl Plaza is a regular contributor to TakeChargeCreditRepair.com an informational website to help you with credit repair services and a credit repair plans so you can start to correct your credit score.

fee. The fee will vary depending on where you go for you credit repair services. Some credit

repair services offer a free 30 day trial. Some offer guarantees of free credit repair or your money

back. All and all, you should estimate paying a fee of $399.99 for credit repair services. This

is the average fee that most charge. Some cost quite a bit more.

Another thing that credit repair services often offer is a way to help you consolidate you debt so

that you can more easily repair your credit. Most people that are in need of credit repair

services have a lot of debt and bills on their credit report. Debt consolidation combines all of your

bills together and you make one payment to one lender instead of several payments to several

lenders. This saves you money on interest rates and helps so that your debt doesn’t get higher. With

debt consolidation, these bills are more easily paid and thus you can repair your credit.

You can find credit repair services in many ways. You can find many online or you can check your

local yellow pages. Be sure to do your research before selecting a credit repair service as some

charge more than others. There are also non profit credit repair services that are available to

help those of you with little or no income.

The above was all of the information you need to get you started in finding a credit repair

service. Repairing your credit can be a difficult and scary ordeal. But with the help of credit repair

services, the task can be much more easily obtained. This will save you from much stress and ease

the difficulties you may be suffering.

The first thing you should look out for when in need of good credit repair services is the affiliations of the firm you are considering. All ethical credit repair businesses will be eager to provide you with their references on request. These are some important issues you should check out in order to steer clear of deceitful credit repair companies.

1. The agency you’re considering should have membership in the Ethical Credit Repair Alliance (ECRA) or a similar regulatory organization. You are often advised to choose businesses that are subscribed to the BBB (Better Business Bureau) when you are looking for any type of service. When you’re searching for good credit repair organizations, companies who are ECRA members are an excellent choice.

This body has its own stringent codes of conduct and any business that gets their approval will give you their best services. The members of this organization are required to maintain the highest ethical standards in dealing with their clients. This helps to protect you, the consumer, from any type of unethical and sub-standard practices.

2. Before looking for help, educate yourself as to what credit repair is all about. Most people who are cheated out of their hard earned money while they are seeking ways out of a financial jam, do not know anything about what repair of credit involves. You need to learn what these services can do for you and what they cannot do.

You can identify agencies who offer false promises only when you clearly understand this difference. For example, no one can remove negative remarks entered on your credit report if these can be verified. You will find many such credit repair companies telling you that they can give you a clean credit report within a month or less. Think carefully; is this legally possible? If not - and it clearly is not - would you still want to pursue such unethical methods?

3. Avoid unsolicited offers you receive through email. It’s not fate that sent you an email offering to repair your credit at a time when you are desperately looking for help. These are fraudulent companies who obtain your email address through various unethical methods, and are sending out millions of spam emails in the hope that they will “catch” some needy soul whom they can milk dry!

Beware of such emails. In 99.9 percent of cases these are fraudulent companies looking for their next victim. Proper credit repair companies will send their offers through newsletters or emails only after you have opted in to receive them.

4. It is illegal to create a “new identity”.” This is one huge fallacy that many people choose to believe, mainly because it would seem to solve all their problems. This belief is due primarily to a lack of knowledge about credit repair. However, this practice - called “File segregation” - is illegal!

Your credit score is a reflection of your entire financial history up to the present time. How is it possible to acquire a “new” credit history? And if you do, would you not have some questions about legality? Do you realize now that the credit repair companies that offer you such a way out of your problems are fraudulent?

5. Demanding complete payment upfront should raise a “red flag.” According to Federal Law, you need to have a detailed written contract from the agency beforehand and the payment is to be after services have been completed. In addition you have the right to cancel within three days.

There are agencies that do charge an initial fee for a credit analysis, and thereafter charge monthly fees as they continue the job of following up with disputes regarding erroneous information in your credit report. But if a company demands their entire fee be paid in advance, they are likely doing so because they realize you will not be inclined to pay later when you discover that they cannot deliver on their promises. Such companies are fraudulent and you would do well to avoid them!

6. Repairing your credit score and credit report takes time. As discussed before, a credit company cannot repair your credit overnight by any legal means, nor remove anything in your credit history if it is verified by the credit bureaus.

Best case scenario: it will take about two, maybe three months to solve the less serious issues, by having inaccurate information deleted from your credit report, and by changing your financial habits by consistently paying bills and debts in a timely manner. More significant items ( for example, repossessions, foreclosures etc.) well, even given the very best financial management, remain on the report for seven years. Bankruptcies will stay on the report for 10 years. “Guarantees” that these can be removed overnight indicate fraud.

7. No contract, no pay! A lot of people could avoid being defrauded if they were to insist that there be a contract in writing; and according with the law, this is your right. Fraudulent companies prefer there to be no contract, and if there is one you can expect that information (such as the fees etc.) will be incomplete. You can learn a lot about these agencies by looking at their contract. If they do not offer a contract for any reason whatsoever, stop your dealings with them instantly.

8. If guarantees are offered, look out! Not even the best and most experienced agencies can guarantee the results of their credit repair services. They can assure you - after they study your report - that they will improve your score by any available legal means. But in the business of credit repair results can never be guaranteed.

Unfortunately, it’s the nature of people to be attracted to the company that tells them what they prefer to hear, and hire them rather than a company who is being truthful. Do not fall into this trap! Even though you may prefer to be told that positive results are guaranteed, any company that does guarantee such results is not trustworthy.

9. Look for counseling services. Most reputable credit repair companies will offer free counseling services.

If the company that you are considering to engage does not, try looking a little deeper. It might not be a trustworthy agency. A good and trustworthy company will encourage its clients to become knowledgeable about credit repair. The services they offer are regarding those issues that require continued and painstaking follow-up to make sure the mistakes on your credit report have all been removed.

10. Wrong advice is a red flag! Some agencies will tell you to dispute every derogatory account on your report by saying “this account is not mine.” Although the results may be a higher credit score right now, the creditor whose loan had been disputed may counter it at a later date, and the bureau will subsequently investigate and verify it.

Given the appallingly poor record keeping habits of the credit bureaus, there is a very high probability that all the details of any item on your credit report may not be accurate. But credit repair companies that advise you to claim “this is not my account” if you are certain that it is, are not to be trusted.

As you can see, there are enough red flags along the way to warn against possible fraud. Prior to seeking help from a credit repair company, you should educate yourself in matters pertaining to credit, including learning the meaning of the terms “credit report” and “credit score”. You also need to know the minimum applicable laws before you go for any type of credit repair help. A good start is to check out the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection and the Ethical Credit Repair Alliance.

You may have heard that bad credit report repair is impossible or illegal. Bad credit report repair is possible and if you contact a law firm which specializes in credit report repair, then it can all be done legally. If you contact a company that is not a law firm, then they may be doing something ineffective or illegal. The only way to be confident that the credit repair information you are getting is legal, accurate and effective is to contact an attorney. Not all attorneys specialize in bad credit report repair. Those who do generally charge a fee for initial consultation and a monthly fee, one company offers to refund overpayment if they are not able to remove a substantial amount of negative credit report information.

Some companies charge for credit repair information, giving you what amounts to helpful hints; where to get your credit report; how to write a letter and other so called credit repair information that you can find on your own for free. These and companies that advertise that they can accomplish bad credit report repair in less than thirty days should be avoided.

Whether it is referred to as “problematic”, “less than perfect” or just “bad credit”, anyone with a credit score below 680 can benefit from bad credit report repair. Why? Because lenders charge higher interest rates to people with what they call “sub-prime” credit scores. How much can that amount to? A $20,000 car that is financed for a period of five years at an interest rate of 14% for someone who has sub-prime credit costs them an extra $4722 in interest. At 20% for someone with bad credit, that same car costs an extra $8593. If bad credit report repair is effective and costs around $1000 (could be less, could be more), then a person with less than perfect credit would still save almost $4000 and the person with bad credit would save about $7500. Bad credit report repair is a worthwhile investment.

None of this can be accomplished if you are currently behind on payments to your lenders, whether credit cards or loans. You may need debt management or credit counseling, but you will not need credit repair information until you can put these issues behind you. Credit counseling, while helpful when you are in over your head, is not the same as bad credit report repair. Even if you have had a bankruptcy, bad credit report repair may be helpful.

It is sometimes possible to achieve some results on your own, but it may be time consuming, frustrating and ineffective. You will also be unaware of everything that you can accomplish unless you contact a lawyer that specializes in bad credit report repair. The credit repair information available from credit bureaus and government agencies only mention some possibilities; how to report discrepancies or inaccuracies. Sometimes, items are not removed in a timely manner, even though the credit bureau says this is not true. If you cannot afford to hire a legal firm, you can begin bad credit report repair by writing a letter which disputes information listed on your credit report to the appropriate credit bureau. They have thirty days to respond.

You should try to keep all emotion out of these letters and put your request in very simple terms. You may have to write a follow-up letter, if the credit bureau does not respond in a timely manner. This letter should also be unemotional and simply state that you have waited a reasonable amount of time (30-45 days) and you would like the inaccurate information removed immediately and a new copy of your report sent to your home address. When you see a company selling something called a credit repair kit, check out the contents before you buy. The previous credit repair information (concerning letter content, etc) is what they are usually selling.

If you are able to achieve results, you are one step closer to bad credit report repair. If the credit bureau does not respond to the follow-up letter, your only real option is to contact an attorney.

With thousands of credit restoration companies conducting business across the country, finding the right one can be difficult and intimidating but it is imperative that you take the time required to not only find a reputable one but also find one that has the knowledge, experience and ability to provide the level of service you expect and the optimal results you deserve. Your decision should not be impulsive. Choosing a bad credit restoration organization will leave you vulnerable and increases the probability that further damage will be caused to your personal credit file but on the other hand, choosing a good credit restoration organization has the potential to be one of the best financial decisions of your life by dramatically cleaning up your personal credit file and improving your credit score. There are numerous items to consider beyond price when making your decision. Recognizing the difference between price and value is imperative as seeking assistance from a company in the credit repair industry is almost always a case of, “You get what you pay for”. The following paragraphs explain the four types of credit repair companies that make up the industry and what to expect from each.

Credit Repair Company Type 1:

The first type of credit repair company is typically a one-man show run out of a home office. In general, this type of company advertises extremely low rates for their service and will usually have unbelievable service guarantees to top it off. It is not uncommon for this type of credit restoration organization to be a complete scam and take the consumers’ money without providing any service at all. Moreover, if you are dealing with a company that falls into this category you are lucky if the only thing you lose is your money and not your identity in the process. In this day and age, identity theft is happening on epidemic proportions. Unless you know the company to be reputable, you should think twice before handing over your personal identification information.

While all credit restoration organizations that fall into this category are not scams, it is very common for the individual running this type of company to be completely unaware of the compliance all credit restoration organizations must adhere to. This company will typically use 3 or 4 standard dispute letters that are extremely generic and not intended to be used in every situation. Although using standard dispute letters may provide some level of positive results, their use also has the potential to further damage your credit. Moreover, the use of standard dispute letters usually only provides temporary results as the negative information removed from your personal credit file will most likely reappear on your credit file the next time it is reported by the creditor.

Credit Repair Company Type 2:

The second type of credit repair company generally appears to be much more legitimate. They will have a physical office but similar to credit repair company type 1, they only use the same standard dispute letters mentioned above. While typically not intending to operate illegally, compliance issues are usually overlooked. The largest difference between credit repair company type 1 and 2 is that the second usually makes use of an inexpensive software program that allows it to produce volume and handle clients on a much larger scale. The letters used are extremely generic and for that reason, will not get the best results possible. Although this type of credit restoration company may do a large amount of business, they are not setup to handle consumers that have specific credit related problems. This type of credit restoration company uses more of a cookie cutter approach.

The first two types of credit repair companies mentioned make up for more than 90% of the credit repair industry. Credit repair company type 3 and 4 are completely different and make up for less than 10% of the industry. It is very important to note the differences.

Credit Repair Company Type 3:

Not only is the third type of credit repair company usually compliant with the laws governing credit restoration organizations, but it is also usually well versed in the U.S. Code used to dispute negative credit items on the consumers’ credit file. Using more than just standard dispute letters, this type of company can be much more effective than the first two. Because this type of credit repair company has such a good understanding of the U.S. Code related to credit, it is typical for this type of company to offer custom credit repair work to its clients. The ability to provide custom work for its clients allows this type of company to go above and beyond the level of service provided by the first two types of credit repair companies.

Credit Repair Company Type 4:

The forth type of credit repair company is very much like the third type in that it is usually compliant with federal law, extremely well versed in the U.S. Code required to be effective in the credit repair industry and typically also offers to perform custom dispute work for its clients. The largest difference between credit restoration company type 3 and 4 is that credit repair company type 4 has attorneys on staff or is contracted with a law firm. Credit repair company type 4 will also usually be more expensive than the other three credit repair company types but will almost always be more effective. Not only can an attorney based credit restoration organization provide the best results possible, but a credit restoration organization that has attorneys on staff or is contracted with a law firm can also enforce the consumers’ rights should legal action be required to correct inaccurate items on a consumer’s personal credit file. Beyond that, by using an attorney based credit restoration company, the consumer can minimize the possibility that an item will be re-reported by a creditor as an attorney has the ability to take additional steps to block negative items from being re-reported on a consumer’s personal credit file. There are very few credit restoration organizations that fall into this category.

As you can see, it is not only important to find a credit restoration organization that is staffed with subject matter experts and has the ability to provide great results but it is also very important to find one that is compliant with the guidelines set forth by the federal government. Further, you should now understand the benefit of using a credit restoration company that has attorneys on staff or is contracted with a law firm. Your credit report has more of an influence in determining your financial future than most anything else. You should not put your credit report in the hands of just anyone. Choose a credit restoration company that is compliant, well versed in the related U.S. Code, staffed by subject matter experts and attorneys or employs the services of a law firm.

When it comes to credit repair after bankruptcy you have essentially three options:

1) Hire a credit repair company

2) Buy credit repair software

3) Do it yourself (free!)

Before we go further, for the purpose of this article “credit repair” means the removal of any inaccurate or obsolete negative information from your credit report - not the removal of accurate non-obsolete negative information from your credit report.

Okay, now that we’ve defined “credit repair“, let’s look at each of the three credit repair options in more detail:

1) Hire a credit repair agency.

You can hire a credit repair company, which usually costs a few hundred dollars or more. The advantage here is it saves you some time.

The downside to hiring a credit repair company is that it can be expensive as mentioned above, costing a few hundred dollars or more.

If you do decide to hire a credit repair company, choose one very carefully. Stay away from credit repair companies promising to delete accurate non-obsolete negative items from your credit report.

Why? Because even if the credit repair company gets lucky and does manage to remove any accurate non-obsolete negative items from your credit report it may only be temporary - the credit reporting agencies update their files on a regular basis, so any accurate non-obsolete negative item that was removed from

your credit report can re-appear again in the future.

While we’re on the topic of “non-obsolete” versus “obsolete” negative information on your credit report, let’s look at how long negative information can remain on your credit report: Most negative items can remain on your credit report for up to seven years from the date they were included in your bankruptcy. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy can remain on your credit report for ten years from the date it was filed, while a Chapter 13 can remain on your report for seven years from the

date it was filed.

2) Buy credit repair software

There are a number of credit repair software programs on the market today. This option is typically less expensive than a credit repair company because you are doing the work. It also saves you time from having to compose your own letters.

Here’s how most credit repair software works: You load it onto your computer, fill in the blanks with your information, and then print out the customized dispute letters the software creates.

The risk you run here is that the credit reporting agency may not investigate the dispute and respond by saying they believe your dispute is “frivolous and irrelevant”. Why? Because when they see any sort of form letter they may think you are using a credit repair company.

3) Do it yourself

This is usually your best option, and it’s free. You just need to know exactly what to do when it comes to credit repair. You can start by visiting each major credit reporting agency’s website and reading their instructions on how to dispute any inaccurate or obsolete negative information on your credit report. The three major credit reporting agencies are: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union.

In addition, you can also pick up a book on credit repair. One word of warning though: Some books and courses encourage you to do illegal things: For example, creating a “new” identity. Stay away from these! Others are excellent resources when it comes to showing you how to remove inaccurate or obsolete negative

items from your credit report.

If you have discharged or dismissed bankruptcy and want to repair your credit, there are some specific steps you need to take. I have seen very few credit repair books that even mention them. In After Bankruptcy Credit Solutions, I go

into detail on each one.

For example, if you are applying for a home loan after bankruptcy, any inaccurate or obsolete negative information on your credit report can cost you thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in extra interest - if it doesn’t prevent you from qualifying for a loan. There is a way that you can get these

negative items on your credit report removed or updated in as little as 48 hours!

So now you know what options you have when it comes to credit repair. Bottom line: Doing it yourself is usually the best, and most inexpensive, option when it comes to credit repair after bankruptcy. It just takes an investment of time on your part - but it can be well worth the effort.

Remember, if you have a discharged or dismissed bankruptcy on your credit report there are some specific steps you need to take when it comes to credit repair. Keep this in mind if you choose the “do it yourself” option and plan to shop for a book on credit repair.

A lot of people are currently finding themselves in a financial bind and are looking for bad credit repair solutions. Fuel costs have shot through the roof, mortgage interest rates are up, and just about everything costs more of late. It certainly isn’t hard to appreciate how so many are finding themselves with a shortage of funds. In these harsh times there are many people who are dealing with problems with bad credit in addition to this, because there is never enough money to pay off all the debt. Financial stress has caused many to look for help with bad credit repair.

Credit Repair Services

When you search for a company that can assist you to fix bad credit report repair, there are repair services existing that specialize in helping you to get your financial credit back in line. Handling your credit repair can be maddening and confusing, and most of us do not have the time and patience or even an inkling as to what is needed in order to deal with all the concerns that are a part of bad credit repair. This causes us to search for a credit repair service, where experts like a credit repair attorney will do the job for us. A major benefit to using this type of company is that they assuredly have more experience than we do. When using an outside service there are a number of items that need to be watched for.

Here are some areas of cautions that you should watch for when you are dealing with financial repair companies:

Caution #1 - Extremely High Fees - One caution here is to watch for exorbitant fees, as this is a sign that a credit repair service may not be working in your favor. There are sure to be fees associated with credit repair; however if they are overly high you need to avoid that company. You should check with a few different companies before deciding on one to see what the average fee is.

Caution #2 - Too Many Assurances - If you have a company making too many promises or assurances you need to be careful. Bad credit repair takes time and not all the bad items can be removed on you’re your report. If a company makes promises or assurances to you that they will remove all of the derogatory credit you need to look for another company.

Caution #3 - Short Time Frame - If a company tells you they can have your credit repaired in a short time frame, take this as a warning. When you set out on a journey to repair your credit it takes time and patience and you are looking at 6 or more months to even begin to see any results. If they give you a time frame below this don’t listen to them, as it is not possible. Find another company to work with.

Credit Repair Tips You Can Use on Your Own

Although there are a number of people who decide to use an expert for their credit repair report, you can in fact work to repair your own credit yourself. Essentially a lot of people find that they are able to save money when they work to repair their own credit with a do-it-yourself credit repair kit. By doing it themselves, they can be certain of not being taken in by a credit repair company that will rip them off. When you take the necessary action that is required to fix your credit, then you will be the one that is in charge of the methods used and you will be able to make certain that you are doing it legally. So, how can you act to repair your credit and fix a bad credit report?

There are numerous repair tips that you can use, here are just a few to help you along.

Repair Tip #1 - Begin by Getting a Copy of Your Credit Reports - If you chose to work on your own credit repair, the foremost thing you will need to do is to obtain copies of your credit reports. Make sure that you get one from each of the three main organizations. TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.

Repair Tip #2 - Look at the Reports and Go Over Them Thoroughly - Once you have your credit reports, it is imperative that you spend some time going over them for accuracy. Sometimes there are erroneous items on your credit report that can be hurting you. Inspect the reports attentively and mark down any errors that you notice.

Repair Tip #3 - Dispute the Errors, Mistakes and Problems - When you locate mistakes on your credit report, it is up to you to question the validity. You can fill out a credit dispute report on line or you can send a letter. You need to inform the credit-reporting agency of the mistakes you have uncovered. Make and keep copies of everything. The credit reporting bureaus are mandated to verify your dispute within 30 days of receiving the complaint

Credit Repair Tip #4 - Create a Debt Reduction Plan - After you have sent in your dispute report, you should work on a debt reduction plan. It is great to get the erroneous items removed from your credit report, however you need to decide on a long-term answer that will help you reduce and get rid of your debt and improve your credit rating. Determine a spending plan, taking into consideration how much your living expenses are and the amount of money remaining that you can pay towards your credit bills every month. Then, stick to the plan.

Bad credit repair will go a long way to help you even when you are in a financial bind. No matter if you determine that you are able to do the work yourself or if you need the services of a credit repair company, the most vital thing that you can do is take control of your financial situation and get your bad credit turned around.

Despite the massive efforts of the credit reporting agencies to convince you otherwise, there are many credit repair companies that are no different than most other services. Like all industries, less-than-honest companies do exist and are damaging to their clients and to the credit repair industry as a whole.

For example, you may have 20 car mechanics in your hometown. Most likely, 17-18 of these mechanics are honest, hardworking people who want to earn a living and give you the best service possible. The other 2 or 3 mechanics may not be so honest and will take your money while not giving you the quality or quantity of service you pay for… or, they may be out-and-out crooks who take your money and lie to you. This doesn’t mean that your town is a bad place to get your car fixed; it just means that, like any industry anywhere, there are good companies, mediocre companies, and really bad companies.

As for credit repair- do your homework. Is the company you are selecting a non-profit organization? Are they claiming that they can delete accurate negative information? Do they provide you with consumer rights information? Do they charge outrageous fees? Consumers should take these things into consideration when hiring a credit repair company to help them with their credit issues.

To better understand the credit repair business some background on the industry is necessary. Beginning in the mid to late 1970s, many unscrupulous entrepreneurs realized that millions of Americans have damaged credit report ratings and that they could make money by convincing these people they could remove all negative information from their credit files.

Because the industry was completely unregulated, hundreds of credit repair companies sprung up all over the place. Most of them were dishonest and were interested only in stealing money from gullible consumers. As a consequence, thousands of consumers were milked out of millions of dollars while receiving little, if any, of what was promised to them.

Federal and state authorities received numerous complaints about credit repair companies, and as a result, both federal and state governments began passing laws regulating the credit repair industry. In addition, credit repair companies must contract with all clients in writing before work begins and cannot collect any upfront fees unless they are a nonprofit organization, a licensed attorney who specializes in credit repair, or a person who works in one of several other areas who are exempt from this requirement. Many states require credit repair companies to register with the attorney general’s office in their state and post a surety bond.

Despite such regulation, dishonest credit repair companies still operate. This bit of knowledge is used by dishonest credit repair services to perform credit repair for their clients. Their aim is to either overwhelm the Big Three with reverification requests (letter writing) with the goal of getting as much negative information removed as they possibly can, or hoping that a few requests slip through and result in the removal of negative information.

It is important to note that not all credit repair companies are dishonest. Some companies offer a valuable service to those who find the whole process of credit repair too boring or complex, or just don’t have the time to learn about credit repair. Credit Repair Service is as legitimate and worthwhile as a tax preparation service — the IRS claims that everyone can do their own taxes, but most people hire someone else to do them.

A number of credit repair companies have been offering to give consumers a “fresh start” with their credit histories. These companies seek to obtain a second Social Security number or federal ID number for their clients. This is commonly referred to as “file segregation”. File segregation is a fraudulent practice and violates many Federal and State Laws. I strongly oppose the abuse of consumers by companies and individuals which direct you to commit fraud in order to obtain “clean” credit reports. In this scheme, you are promised a chance to hide unfavorable credit information by establishing a new credit identity. That may sound perfect, especially if you’re afraid that you won’t get any credit as long as bankruptcy appears on your credit record. The problem: “File segregation” is illegal. If you use it, you could face fines or even a prison sentence.

If you have filed for bankruptcy, you may receive a letter from a credit repair company that warns you about your inability to get credit cards, personal loans, or any other types of credit for 10 years. For a fee, the company promises to help you hide your bankruptcy and establish a new credit identity to use when you apply for credit. These companies also make pitches in classified ads, on radio and TV, and even over the Internet.

If you pay the fee and sign up for the service, you may be directed to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Typically, EINs - which resemble Social Security numbers - are used by businesses to report financial information to the IRS and the Social Security Administration. After you receive your EIN, the credit repair service will tell you to use it in place of your Social Security number when you apply for credit. They’ll also tell you to use a new mailing address and some credit references.

To convince you to establish a new credit identity, the credit repair service is likely to make a variety of false claims. Listen carefully; these false claims, along with the pitch for getting a new credit identity, should alert you to the possibility of fraud. You’ll probably hear:

Claim 1: You will not be able to get credit for 10 years (the period of time bankruptcy information may stay on your credit record).

Each creditor has its own criteria for granting credit. While one may reject your application because of a bankruptcy, another may grant you credit shortly after you filed for bankruptcy. And, given a new reliable payment record, your chances of getting credit will probably increase as time passes.

Claim 2: The company or “file segregation” program is affiliated with the federal government.

The federal government does not support or work with companies that offer such programs.

Claim 3: The “file segregation” program is legal.

It is a federal crime to make any false statements on a loan or credit application. The credit repair company may advise you to do just that. It is a federal crime to misrepresent your Social Security number. It also is a federal crime to obtain an EIN from the IRS under false pretenses.

Further, you could be charged with mail or wire fraud if you use the mail or the telephone to apply for credit and provide false information. Worse yet, file segregation likely would constitute civil fraud under many state laws.

All the information in this article is provided to help clear up those “questionable” items on your credit reports. “Credit repair” is a general term usually used to describe a systematic process of rehabilitating an individual’s creditworthiness, or financial credit reputation. The process is generally started by obtaining copies of the individual’s credit report, reviewing the credit report for errors, omissions, and misleading information, and requesting corrections to such information by means of a formal dispute letter. Many laws, regulations, and practices govern this process, and many organizations exist that will assist in guiding individuals through this sometimes complex process, though much, if not all, may be accomplished by individuals by their own efforts.

When you identify inaccurate, erroneous, and obsolete entries on your credit reports and bring it to the credit reporting agency’s attention they must do one of two things by law. Correct it or delete it! The credit bureaus must investigate all disputes and respond to you within a reasonable time period which is around 30 days. If you are in the process of applying for a loan, immediately notify your lender of any incorrect information in your report. Your lender will need to reorder your credit report and score once any changes have been made to your information at the credit bureau. Small errors may have effect on your score. If there are significant errors, however, the lender may turn down you’re application entirely or charge you a much higher interest rate. The three major credit-reporting agencies under the statutes of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) must deliver an accurate credit report to every American consumer.
